Hard Mode: Playing With True Teammates

Published 2026-10-21

Normal mode asks whether two players ever wore the same franchise's uniform. Hard mode asks a stricter question: did they play there in the same season? That one change makes the graph much sparser and turns the puzzle into a test of real roster knowledge.

The rules in one paragraph

Hard mode is its own daily puzzle with its own once-per-day lock, streak, and leaderboard. Links require true teammates: a shared team in the same season. There is no college link and no stated objective. The goal is simply the shortest legal path across a deeper graph. Route labels carry the season, for example a team name followed by a two-digit year, so you can see exactly when two players overlapped.

Think in seasons, not franchises

A franchise has thousands of alumni, but a single season's roster has only a few dozen real contributors. That is the whole difference. A player who spent 2014 in Seattle is only connected to the people who were on the 2014 Seattle roster, not to everyone who ever wore the team's colors.

Start by pinning down the seasons for the Start and the Finish. Players who changed teams mid-career give you two or three distinct seasons to anchor on, and each of those is a separate roster to search.

Favor veterans with long careers

Long careers cover many seasons and many rosters, so veterans are your best connectors in hard mode. A quarterback who played fifteen years touched fifteen rosters. Searching for players whose careers overlap both endpoints in time is usually faster than searching by team.

Watch the timeline too. If the Start played in the early 2000s and the Finish debuted in 2018, your chain has to move across the years, and the connectors will tend to be long-career players who bridge the eras.

Practice versus the daily lock

Replaying a solved puzzle or using a hint is practice only and never touches your streak. If you want to improve at hard mode without risking a streak, work through the archive, then come back to the daily with the pattern fresh.
